Tips & Instructions for Completing your

Colour Questionnaire

It’s easy- we promise!

We’re so glad you’ve made the decision to purchase a virtual paint colour consultation. You’re well on your way to having a home that you love: a space that complements your home’s existing finishes and features, aligns with how you want to feel when you walk in the door, and reflects your unique personal style. But first, there’s a few quick things we need you to do before we can get started on creating your personalized paint colour recommendations.

Here’s a little reminder of the steps involved in our virtual consultation process, then we’ll go through each one.

Steps for Virtual colour consultation

Step 1: Take Photos of Your Space

With your phone, snap some photos. Five to eight photos is usually enough for a straight-forward room, open layout spaces and rooms with more details will likely need more photographs. Here are a few things to remember when taking your photos:

  • Shoot with as much natural light as possible. Open the drapes and take your photos on a bright day (but avoid taking photos when the sun is streaming directly in).

  • Take photos in landscape mode whenever possible.

  • Make sure the flash on your phone is off.

  • Turn off all overhead light and lamps if you can. Artificial lighting can alter the colours and undertones in a room.

Next, take close-up photos of pieces that you plan to keep in the space, especially if they are favourite pieces or items you may want to base the room’s colour palette off of. These items can be throw pillows, draperies, upholstered pieces or framed art. Do the same for fixed interior finishes such as tile flooring, stonework, and carpet (with the exception of hardwood- we don’t need a photo of this). When taking your photographs, place a piece of white printer paper beside them. This will help us to identify the undertones in the piece and to make the most accurate colour recommendations.

If you’ve picked out new finishes for your room, photograph your samples with them arranged in the same orientation that they will be installed.

For example, in this photograph of samples for a new kitchen, the marble countertop and tile sample are horizontal and the backsplash tile is vertical. Also include in your photo a white piece of paper.

Next, upload your photos to a photo-sharing app.

We recommend using Google Photos to upload your photos, but you’re welcome to use whatever photo-sharing app you prefer. Google Photos is an app you can download on your phone, then easily upload your room photos once you’re ready. Follow the instructions in the images below if you’re new to Google Photos. After you’ve uploaded your photos to an album within Google Photos, you’ll be able to create a unique URL that will link to your photos. For the two-room package, please create one album for each space. You will be able to create a URL for each album, and include the link for each one in the questionnaire.

Step 2: Share your style by creating an inspiration board on Pinterest (optional)

Sharing pictures of spaces that inspire you is so helpful for us to understand your style and vision for your space. You’re welcome to submit an inspiration board in any form and on any platform, but we find most people prefer creating theirs on Pinterest: a free and easy-to-use app on your phone or computer. Once you’ve signed up, create a board and share the URL in your questionnaire. See the images below for instructions if you haven’t used Pinterest before.

Step 3: Complete the questionnaire

Fill out our Virtual Colour Consultation Questionnaire. Give yourself about 30 minutes to an hour to complete all the questions. Unfortunately, you’re not able to save your progress on this form, so only start if you can finish it. You’ll be asked to include links to your photos and inspiration board in this questionnaire.

Steps 4-6: We get to work!

You’ll receive our personalized paint colour recommendations in a presentation emailed to you within 8-10 business days. We do ask that you test our recommendations before painting your entire space: we’ll provide more info on how to do that in our presentation.
